Rotary and Friends in Haywards Heath, Sussex- make a difference by setting up local peer support group

Inspired by the Rotary-Bipolar UK partnership to raise awareness of bipolar, Rotarians and friends from the Rotary Club of Cuckfield, Lindfield and Haywards Heath (RCCLHH) embarked on a Pole to Pole challenge across the South Downs in August 2023. Beginning in Amberley, our long-distance walkers endured walking a half marathon in heavy rain to Upper Beeding, where sunshine emerged, and our fair-weather walkers joined the team. Simultaneously several other members of the club walked whilst on holiday abroad. It was a fabulous team effort, and we collectively walked over 300km with four of our team walking a full marathon. This was only the beginning of our journey - club members continued to walk, cycle and run until World Bipolar Day 2024 when we collectively travelled an amazing ~13,000 km, with enthusiastic cyclist Mike Oliver contributing a phenomenal 9700km. We had collectively travelled two thirds of the distance from the north to south pole and were top of the Pole to Pole Leaderboard. Through our Pole to Pole sponsorship we raised over £6000 which resulted in the establishment of an online local peer support group for Haywards Heath, Mid Sussex and Crawley.

In Mental Health Awareness week, May 2024 our Rotary Club partnered with the Greater Haywards Heath Bike Ride. We are delighted that Bipolar UK was selected as a charity to support. Cheered on by Adam Deacon, Bipolar UK Ambassador & BAFTA-award winning actor, over 300 riders each cycled distances from 12 - 74 miles across the Sussex countryside. Through the amazing sponsors of the Bike Ride, we were able to donate over £6500 to Bipolar UK.

We are delighted and proud that these funds have enabled the local online support group to transition in to an in-person support group commencing September 2024.

Rotary's Cluster Conference - Exeter

Bipolar UK were delighted to be part of Rotary's Cluster Conference in Exeter last weekend which attracted hundreds of Rotary members from across the South West of England and South Wales. Our ambassador, Leah Charles-King gave an inspiring talk and we hosted an information stall for Rotary members to learn more about bipolar and how they can support our partnership.

Ride for a Reason - Haywards Heath Bike Ride

Ride for a reason was held on Sunday 19 May, 2024 at the Haywards Heath Bike Ride, West Sussex to fundraise for Bipolar UK.

There were four different routes to choose  - from 12.5 miles to 73.5 miles.

Adam Deacon, BAFTA award-winning actor, writer and director and Bipolar UK ambassador made a special appearance and kicked off the bike ride. It was also a fun day out for all ages who preferred not to get on a bike, with activities for children including Martial Arts, dance displays and Paws on Track dog show and live musical entertainment. The Bipolar UK team were also on hand to share more around the facts, symptoms and support for people affected by bipolar.

Rotary members from the Rotary Club of Cuckfield, Lindfield and Haywards Heath were proud to partner with the Haywards Heath Town Team for this event and fundraise for Bipolar UK.

The bike ride took place during Mental Health Awareness Week, with the theme this year being ‘Movement: Moving more for our mental health'.

The Cuckfield, Lindfield and Haywards Heath Rotary Team recently walked and cycled over 10,000km for their ‘Pole to Pole’ challenge and have raised over £6000 for Bipolar UK to establish a much-needed online local support group. The Haywards Heath Bike Ride was the grand finale to its fund-raising efforts to  enable the local support group to move from online to in-person meetings.

Judith Pratt, President of the Rotary Club of Rotary Club of Cuckfield, Lindfield and Haywards Heath commented: ‘I am delighted that we will make a real difference to the lives of local people affected by bipolar with Rotary’s achievements in raising awareness and establishing a local peer support group.'
